Disappearing 9 patch

After picking out my friends big girl blanket fabric I immediately got to ironing and cutting. I really wish all my quilts came together this easily and looked so good doing it!I cut all the 2/3 yards of fabric into 5 inch squares this left me some large and small scrap pieces for random projects in the future. This picture doesn't show the colors well at all... but you can get an idea of how I set up my system.I sewed 16 9 patch squares together using pieces of ever fabric in the first 9 then two whites and one brown in the last 7 to lighten things up. Originally I only had the first 9 squares but figured once I cut them down again it wouldn't be large enough, so another 9 patch got added to two sides. Then, to create the "disappearing" part of the nine patch you 1/4 the square by cutting it down the center 2 or 3 times depending how you look at it.Resulting in a square that looks like it took a long time to make when really it only took about 5 hours to get that whole quilt. Ok... so I'm kind of a slow sewer I think other people would produce this much quicker but I was watching a movie and had to get up and hang each square on my curtain as it was finished to see where all my squares were landing. I didn't want to much repeat in the 9 patches, which I figured was easy to do since I only had nine colors!
Now, that is all the sneak peak you get of that quilt. I want it to be a surprise for Mom and Baby. I think a solid backing would suit this quilt best. It will be busy enough on the top, the back can be something easy. I will be using Natural and Warm (I think that's the brand) as the batting. It is 100% organic. I figured this would make me feel better about using non organic fabric for my friend since she is environmentally friendly.
But... another sneak peak that I promised yesterday....
No, its not a halloween quilt. Its actually two Christmas quilts! I know your laughing at me... its ok. It makes since for some people, others will just have to wait and see.
